Assignment #3 - Dustin Gregoire



For Assignment #3, I focused my map around Joseph’s of Portland, located on Fore Street in Portland. This assignment opened my eyes more to the physical locations of everything that has to do with Joseph’s of Portland’s day-to-day business. Since Joseph’s of Portland is a small locally owned business, all of the research done was from my perspective and thought process behind how the business is ran. Firstly, I marked Joseph’s of Portland as the blue market. Joseph’s of Portland is located within the Old Port, which is a nice shopping center for the state of Maine. Next, I marked Joseph’s closest competitors (in my opinion) in red. These competitors would be David Wood Clothiers, Life is Good, Portland Dry Goods, and Urban Outfitters. These are all successful clothing companies in the Old Port area who can take business away from Joseph’s of Portland. Lastly, I marked points of interest, basically places where Joseph’s of Portland could do advertising as their products would be most useful/sought out in these areas. I marked these points of interest in a green color. Such locations would be the Aura night club, Merrill Auditorium, Empire Chinese Kitchen, Evo Kitchen + Bar, and DiMillo’s on the Water. All five of these locations tend to typically require high end clothing, which Joseph’s of Portland can provide, so advertising to these areas would give consumers a subconscious thinking of, “I should purchase clothes from Joseph’s of Portland for the next time I have an outing at this restaurant/event!”

I included some pictures with each mark left on the interactive Google Map. For competing businesses, I included pictures of their clothing lines that may provide competition against Joseph’s of Portland. For areas of interest, I included pictures of events that show of how Joseph’s of Portland’s clothing lines would be an interest of the people in the pictures.

I believe my map would be useful for Joseph’s of Portland to understand how close their competition and consumers are from their store. This would encourage Joseph’s to increase local advertisement, even street advertisement around these locations to attract consumers. I personally believe interactive maps like these are in general very useful for any kind of business/company. They can put strategies into perspective by seeing the area you are working with physically.
