Random thoughts about Chipotle vs Qdoba...

I think when most people think of fast food Mexican places, both Chipotle and Qdoba usually come to mind. However, I think that Chipotle definitely has the four P's down - Qdoba, not so much.

Product: Both sell relatively the same products - Mexican food. Qdoba however has some different stuff like taco bowls and soups!
Price: Chipotle burritos are typically cheaper than Qdoba's - standard meat + rice + beans + cheese + salsa is ~$8.10 for Chipotle and ~$8.75 for Qdoba. Personally as well, Chipotle's burritos are more well structured and tasty!
Promotion: Chipotle has the promotion game on lock down. They're everywhere I look on social media. Always collaborating with other celebrities or relevant companies, making their brand known. They also often offer discount days and what not for specific groups of people, such as college students!
Place: Chipotle has their own building in South Portland, right across from the mall - not directly next to any crazy competitors. Meanwhile, Qdoba is a bit hidden by the Mall food court - not exactly inside of the actual food court, either. In addition, it looks like Qdoba only has one Maine location - Chipotle is in Westbrook, SoPo, Portland, Augusta, and Bangor!

So, Chipotle has the majority of the four P's down - they could broaden their menu - but their quality is top notch consistently. Qdoba, in my opinion as a consumer, should work on the quality of their food, opening better locations, and promoting themselves more.

For Assignment #3, I focused my map around Joseph’s of Portland, located on Fore Street in Portland. This assignment opened my eyes more to the physical locations of everything that has to do with Joseph’s of Portland’s day-to-day business. Since Joseph’s of Portland is a small locally owned business, all of the research done was from my perspective and thought process behind how the business is ran. Firstly, I marked Joseph’s of Portland as the blue market. Joseph’s of Portland is located within the Old Port, which is a nice shopping center for the state of Maine. What does HHI index mean? Which industries are relatively less competitive? Why? The HHI Index is a measure of size of firms compared to the industry and how much competition is amongst them.  Increase in HHI mean a decrease in competition while increasing market power, and the opposite is vice-versa. Based on your answer to part 1, which type of market structure has higher advertising expenditures? Use the characteristics of each market structure to explain why this relationship might exist. Movie studios & restaurants need to spend more on advertising based on the fact that they have a lower HHI number. Vice versa, cereal and laundry detergent companies would have to spend less.
