For Assignment #3, I focused my map around Joseph’s of Portland, located on Fore Street in Portland. This assignment opened my eyes more to the physical locations of everything that has to do with Joseph’s of Portland’s day-to-day business. Since Joseph’s of Portland is a small locally owned business, all of the research done was from my perspective and thought process behind how the business is ran. Firstly, I marked Joseph’s of Portland as the blue market. Joseph’s of Portland is located within the Old Port, which is a nice shopping center for the state of Maine. Next, I marked Joseph’s closest competitors (in my opinion) in red. These competitors would be David Wood Clothiers, Life is Good, Portland Dry Goods, and Urban Outfitters. These are all successful clothing companies in the Old Port area who can take business away from Joseph’s of Portland. Workbook for Chapter 12 - Developing New Products Section A True/False: 1. Continuous and dynamically continuous innovations are higher on compatibility than discontinuous innovations. True! Continuous innovations, from my understanding, are easier for consumers to feel compatible with than discontinuous innovations would be. 2. Innovators are “generic” in nature. False! What did you learn from this chapter? The differences and pros/cons of primary and secondary data. Things that should be known before starting research. Do you prefer lecture slides or workbooks? I like using workbooks more since they let me have a physical thing to learn off of. I’ve always preferred workbooks as a student. Where are you confused? I don’t believe I’m confused on anything in Ch.10! What do you believe to be true from the book/class material? The different ways to preform research that the book talks about. What do you question or not totally believe? I actually think all of the things brought up make sense and are believable. What learning can you apply to your client’s business? Basically how to obtain and organize data, selecting how I’m going to collect that data (like the method) and how to pick that method based on what kind of stuff I’m trying to gather for data. This past weekend I visited Washington D.C. and I noticed how the Metro there was essentially turned into advertising public transportation. Posters and billboards were plastered all across the trains and stations that not noticing the advertisements would be extremely odd. This was super interesting to me, since the Metro is such a staple part of D.C. and makes traveling around the city so much easier. Companies and buy out advertising space and cover so much ground by just being on a train. Advertising via public transportation is a very underrated strategy, in my opinion!

In chapter 9, segmentation, positioning, and targeting were taught. I learned why placement matters because of perceptual maps, and what brands compete with one another. I personally prefer workbooks. I think I could use going over cluster analysis a bit more. I believe that analytics can’t tell 100% of everything, but it can be useful. I’d probably not totally believe that analytics are 100% reliable. Google Analytics can be used for my company to see where their traffic is coming from and advertise to those specific areas. Learning more about perceptual maps would be very useful, it’d be helpful if we could do this in class as a group activity!
